While HIMELE's activities are geared towards people of all ages, HIMELE's focus is in promoting and perpetuating Hawaiian music, culture, and the Hawaiian steel guitar to today's youth. These photos show NextGen steeel guitarists in various steel guitar festival performances, school visitations, steel guitar hands-on experiences, and other teaching moments. Many students have not heard of the Hawaiian stseel guitar or its significance in Hawaiian music and culture. Others have heard the sound of the instrument but do not know how that sound is produced. After experiencing the Hawaiian steel guitar, many students are encouraged to continue their learning journey with the Hawaiian steel guitar.
